An architectural elevation drawing by Noach van der Meer (II) featuring a classical gateway design for the Amsterdam naval warehouse.
This architectural study by Noach van der Meer (II) depicts a design for a gateway intended for the Zeemagazijn, or naval warehouse, in Amsterdam. The drawing reflects the formal precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch architectural drafting. The structure follows a classical order, featuring a pedimented archway supported by columns. The tympanum contains a relief carving of naval motifs, including a shell and nautical implements, which align with the building's function as a maritime storehouse. The word 'MARINE' is inscribed clearly within the frieze, identifying the purpose of the entrance.
The artist employs a restrained palette of grey, blue, and soft ochre washes to define the shadows and materials. The columns are rendered with subtle markings to suggest marble, while the arch itself is shaded to provide a sense of depth. The composition is strictly frontal, typical of elevation drawings used for planning or presentation purposes. The lower portion of the sheet includes a handwritten caption, 'DE POORT VOOR T' ZEE COMTOIR', which provides context for the intended site. This work offers a glimpse into the civic planning and decorative aesthetics of Amsterdam during the period, where classical proportions were applied to functional urban infrastructure.
Noach van der Meer (II) was a member of a prominent family of Dutch engravers and artists. His work often involved documenting the urban environment and architectural projects of his time. This drawing is held within the collections of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting the historical interest in the development of Amsterdam's maritime facilities. The clean lines and balanced proportions demonstrate the influence of Neoclassical principles on the design of public buildings in the Netherlands.
