A 1923 watercolour by Auguste Herbin depicting the bridge over the Loue river in Moutier, rendered with fluid washes and simplified forms.
Auguste Herbin, a French artist associated with the development of early twentieth-century abstraction, produced this watercolour in 1923. The work depicts the bridge over the Loue river in Moutier, a location in the Franche-Comté region of France. Herbin employs a fluid, expressive application of watercolour, allowing the pigment to bleed into the paper to define the surrounding hills and foliage. The composition is structured around the horizontal span of the bridge, which acts as a bridge between the architectural elements on the left and the tower on the right.
The palette relies on soft, muted tones of ochre, sage green, and pale blue. Unlike his later, strictly geometric compositions, this piece retains a representational quality, though the forms are simplified and flattened. The hills in the background are rendered with broad, sweeping washes that suggest volume without the use of traditional chiaroscuro. The architecture is reduced to basic shapes, reflecting the artist's interest in the structural properties of the scene. The water in the foreground is left largely unpainted, creating a sense of space and calm that balances the denser, more saturated areas of green in the upper portion of the frame.
This work provides insight into Herbin's practice during the interwar period, a time when he moved between figurative observation and the rigid geometric abstraction for which he is often recognised. The brushwork is deliberate, showing a confidence in the medium that allows the paper's texture to remain visible. It is a study of light and form, capturing the specific atmosphere of the Loue valley through a modernist lens. The work remains a clear example of how Herbin interpreted the natural environment through a simplified, rhythmic visual language.
