A 1626 mythological painting by Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem depicting the Roman goddess Pomona amidst a bountiful fruit harvest.
Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, a founding member of the Haarlem Academy, produced this mythological scene in 1626. The composition depicts Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit trees and orchards, receiving the harvest. The artist employs the elongated figures and artificial poses characteristic of the Northern Mannerist tradition, which dominated Dutch art during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
The figures are arranged in a staged, theatrical manner against a dark, wooded backdrop. The central focus is the abundance of the harvest, presented in baskets and held by the figures. The skin tones of the subjects are rendered with a smooth, porcelain-like quality, contrasting with the deep shadows of the surrounding foliage. The artist uses a controlled palette, allowing the warm tones of the fruit and the pale flesh of the figures to emerge from the gloom.
This work reflects the intellectual climate of the period, where classical mythology provided a framework for exploring themes of fertility and nature. The figures are positioned to create a sense of rhythmic movement, guiding the eye across the canvas from the seated figure in the foreground to the standing figure reaching for fruit above. The precise brushwork and attention to anatomical detail demonstrate the technical rigour associated with the Haarlem school. The signature and date, visible on the stone block in the lower left, confirm the attribution to van Haarlem during his later career, when he continued to refine his approach to classical subjects.
