A detailed botanical study of four plum varieties from George Brookshaw's 1812 publication, Pomona Britannica, featuring precise hand-coloured aquatint engraving.
This print originates from George Brookshaw's celebrated work, Pomona Britannica, published in London between 1804 and 1812. Brookshaw, originally a cabinet maker and painter of japanned furniture, turned his attention to pomology during the later stages of his career. This collection documents the finest fruit varieties grown in the royal gardens and the estates of the British aristocracy during the early nineteenth century.
The composition features four distinct varieties of plums, arranged against a dark, atmospheric background. This choice of backdrop is characteristic of Brookshaw's approach, as it allows the subtle gradations of colour on the fruit skins and the texture of the leaves to emerge with clarity. The technique employed is a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving, finished with hand-applied watercolour. This method provides a soft, painterly quality that captures the bloom on the fruit skin and the delicate veining of the foliage.
Each specimen is depicted with scientific precision, showing the fruit attached to its branch with leaves intact. The work reflects the period's fascination with natural history and the systematic classification of cultivated plants. Brookshaw's background in decorative arts informs the balance and poise of the arrangement, which avoids clutter while providing enough detail for botanical identification. The print remains a primary reference for historical fruit varieties and demonstrates the high standard of British printmaking during the Regency era.
