A detailed botanical study of cherry varieties from George Brookshaw's 1812 publication, Pomona Britannica, featuring precise hand-coloured engraving.
George Brookshaw, a cabinet maker turned botanical artist, produced his magnum opus, 'Pomona Britannica', between 1804 and 1812. This work documents the fruit varieties grown in the royal gardens at Kensington and other prominent British estates. Plate X, depicting various cherry cultivars, demonstrates the technical precision required for such a publication. Brookshaw utilised a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving to achieve the soft, rounded forms of the fruit, followed by meticulous hand-colouring to capture the subtle gradations of skin tone from deep, near-black purple to translucent yellow and bright red.
The composition is divided into three distinct clusters of fruit and foliage. The upper section features dark cherries against a lighter background, while the lower two clusters are set against a dark, atmospheric wash that mimics the appearance of a shadow-filled orchard. This contrast allows the light-catching surfaces of the cherries to emerge with clarity. The leaves are rendered with attention to their serrated edges and veining, providing a structural counterpoint to the spherical fruit.
Unlike many botanical works of the period that focused on scientific dissection, Brookshaw aimed for a painterly quality that appealed to the aesthetic sensibilities of the landed gentry. The inclusion of a cross-section of a cherry in the lower-left cluster provides a nod to pomological study, yet the overall presentation remains decorative. The work reflects the Regency-era fascination with horticulture and the classification of the natural world. Each print was issued as part of a subscription series, intended for binding into large-format volumes that served as both reference material and status symbols for the owners of country estates. This print remains a fine example of early nineteenth-century British printmaking, combining scientific observation with the refined techniques of the engraver's craft.
