A fine art print of Heian period calligraphy by Fujiwara no Yukinari, featuring fluid kana script on dyed paper.
This fine art print reproduces a fragment from the Sekido-bon version of the Kokin Wakashū, or Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern. Attributed to the master calligrapher Fujiwara no Yukinari, this piece represents the pinnacle of Heian period kana script. Yukinari is recognised as one of the Sanzeki, or Three Brush Traces, whose work defined the aesthetic standards of the Japanese court during the eleventh century.
The calligraphy displays a fluid, rhythmic quality that characterises the wayō style, which moved away from earlier Chinese-influenced models toward a uniquely Japanese sensibility. The characters are written in a cursive hand, where the ink flow varies in weight to create a sense of motion across the dyed paper surface. The vertical columns of text are arranged with a balance between density and negative space, reflecting the poetic nature of the content, which focuses on the seasonal imagery of plum blossoms.
In this specific fragment, the ink remains crisp against the muted, cool-toned paper. The composition relies on the interplay between the dark, sweeping strokes of the brush and the subtle texture of the background. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers a glimpse into the literary culture of the Heian aristocracy, where the mastery of calligraphy was an essential skill for court officials. The work is not merely a record of text but a visual expression of the poem's mood, capturing the ephemeral beauty of the plum blossom through the deliberate, controlled movement of the brush. This print preserves the authentic character of the original manuscript, allowing for a close examination of the brushwork and the specific stylistic choices that define Yukinari’s contribution to Japanese art history.
