A refined example of late Ming Dynasty calligraphy by Chen Yuansu, featuring fluid cursive script on a gold-flecked fan-shaped ground.
This work by Chen Yuansu displays the refined brushwork characteristic of late Ming Dynasty literati culture. Executed on a fan-shaped format, the piece features columns of cursive script, or caoshu, which prioritise the fluid movement of the brush over strict legibility. Chen Yuansu, a scholar-official active during the Wanli period, was known for his mastery of various calligraphic styles. His approach here demonstrates a balance between controlled structure and spontaneous expression, a hallmark of the period's aesthetic values.
The ink is applied to a gold-flecked paper ground, which provides a subtle, shimmering texture that interacts with the dark, saturated ink strokes. The composition is dictated by the fan's radial geometry, requiring the artist to adjust the scale and spacing of the characters to maintain visual equilibrium across the curved surface. Red seals, placed at the lower corners, provide a necessary chromatic counterpoint to the monochrome ink, acting as both a mark of ownership and a formal element of the design.
In the context of Ming Dynasty art, the fan was a popular medium for the exchange of poetry and calligraphy among the elite. These objects were often intended for private appreciation rather than public display. The text itself reflects the scholarly tradition of the era, where the act of writing was considered a direct extension of the individual's moral and intellectual character. By preserving the rhythmic quality of the brush, Chen Yuansu captures a moment of creative focus, offering a glimpse into the disciplined yet expressive practices of the late Ming literati. This print reproduces the original's texture and tonal variations, maintaining the integrity of the ink work against the metallic paper background.
