A refined example of Japanese calligraphy and ink painting by the master Shōkadō Shōjō, featuring a classical poem accompanied by delicate hollyhocks.
This work by Shōkadō Shōjō represents the synthesis of calligraphy and painting characteristic of the early Edo period. Shōkadō was a monk of the Shingon sect and one of the Kanei Sanpitsu, or the Three Brushes of the Kanei era, a title denoting his mastery of the calligraphic arts. The piece features a poem by the Heian-period poet Onakatomi Yoshinobu, written in a fluid, cursive script that occupies the space alongside the painted hollyhocks.
The visual composition relies on the interplay between the ink-wash application of the flowers and the rhythmic flow of the kana characters. The hollyhocks are rendered with a soft, atmospheric quality, using muted tones that allow the text to maintain its authority on the page. This practice of combining classical poetry with decorative underpainting was a common pursuit among the literati of the time, who sought to evoke the aesthetic sensibilities of the Heian court. The paper itself, often decorated with gold or silver flecks in such works, provides a tactile background that complements the ink work.
Shōkadō Shōjō is noted for his ability to balance the structural requirements of calligraphy with the more gestural demands of ink painting. In this instance, the hollyhocks do not merely serve as a frame for the poem; they interact with the text, creating a unified visual experience. The work reflects the cultural values of the seventeenth-century Japanese elite, who placed high importance on the integration of literary and visual arts. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink and the delicate balance of the composition, offering a view into the refined artistic traditions of the period.
