A classic Muromachi period ink painting by Motsurin Jōtō, featuring a plum tree silhouetted against a pale moon.
This work by the Zen monk Motsurin Jōtō, also known as Bokusai, represents the tradition of ink painting that flourished during the Muromachi period in Japan. The composition centres on a circular moon, rendered in subtle ink washes, which provides a backdrop for the gnarled, reaching branches of a plum tree. The plum blossom holds a specific place in East Asian art, often associated with resilience and the arrival of spring, as the flowers appear while snow remains on the ground.
The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the branches, using varying pressure to suggest the texture of aged bark and the delicacy of new buds. The ink application is restrained, relying on the contrast between the pale, circular void of the moon and the darker, more concentrated ink of the tree. This use of negative space is a hallmark of the period, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the subject and the surrounding emptiness. The inclusion of calligraphy to the right of the image adds a vertical element that balances the circular form, integrating text and image in a manner common to the literati tradition.
As a piece of Zen-influenced art, the work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for an economy of means. The focus remains on the essential form of the plum tree, captured with a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The mounting, featuring a dark fabric with a repeating pattern, frames the silk painting, providing a formal border that separates the meditative scene from the viewer's space. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original ink wash, preserving the atmospheric quality of the moonlit scene and the precise, rhythmic brushwork of the artist.
