A refined woodblock print featuring a plum blossom branch alongside a decorated knife and folded paper, capturing the quiet aesthetic of Japanese surimono.
This woodblock print by Uematsu Tōshū belongs to the tradition of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists. The composition presents a quiet juxtaposition of natural and man-made objects. A branch of plum blossoms, rendered with delicate, soft-focus ink washes, occupies the upper right quadrant. The blossoms are depicted in a pale, ethereal manner, suggesting the fleeting nature of the season.
In the foreground, a knife in a decorated red sheath rests upon a stack of folded paper. The sheath features bold, black-ink patterns that contrast with the muted tones of the plum branch. The precision of the carving on the sheath suggests the influence of traditional craft aesthetics, while the overall arrangement reflects the refined sensibilities of the early twentieth-century Japanese print movement. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left corner provides a poetic accompaniment to the visual elements, a common feature in surimono that integrates literature with the visual arts.
The print demonstrates a mastery of woodblock techniques, particularly in the application of colour and the subtle gradation of ink. The paper texture is visible, adding a tactile quality to the image. Uematsu Tōshū, known for his contributions to the shin-hanga movement, here employs a minimalist approach that allows each element to occupy its own space within the frame. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the balance between the organic form of the plum and the geometric, patterned surface of the knife sheath. This print offers a glimpse into the sophisticated cultural practices of the period, where the appreciation of everyday objects was elevated through artistic representation.
