A 1654 etching by Theodor van Kessel, serving as the frontispiece for a series of animal studies featuring a donkey and sheep.
This etching by Theodor van Kessel serves as the frontispiece for a series of animal studies titled 'Alcune Animali'. Published in 1654, the work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Flemish printmaking. The composition features a prominent stone monument or signpost, which carries the title and attribution details in Italian, crediting the designs to Jan van den Hecke and the engraving to van Kessel himself.
To the right of the central monument, a donkey and two sheep are depicted in a naturalistic manner. The animals are rendered with fine, controlled lines that define their textures, from the coarse coat of the donkey to the woolly fleece of the sheep. The background remains sparse, suggesting a rural setting with distant hills, which keeps the focus on the subjects and the informative text. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weight provides volume to the animals and depth to the stone structure, reflecting the artist's command of the etching needle.
Van Kessel was a prolific engraver who frequently collaborated with other artists to reproduce their drawings. This specific plate is a clear example of the professional relationships common in the period, where the division of labour between the draughtsman and the printmaker was standard practice. The work provides a glimpse into the systematic approach to natural history and animal illustration during the mid-seventeenth century, where such series were produced for both artistic appreciation and educational reference. The print is preserved with its original lettering, maintaining the historical context of its publication in the Raamsteeg district.
