This work by Kano Sōshū, a member of the influential Kano family of painters during the Momoyama period, presents a seasonal study on a fan-shaped format. The composition utilises the characteristic gold leaf background associated with the period, providing a reflective surface that interacts with the light in the room. The subject matter depicts a plantain leaf weighed down by a heavy accumulation of snow, contrasted against a small bird perched upon a gnarled branch.
The Kano school style is evident in the precise brushwork and the balanced arrangement of elements within the fan shape. Sōshū employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the white of the snow and the muted tones of the bird to stand out against the metallic gold ground. The depiction of the plantain leaf, with its serrated edges and thick white coating, demonstrates the technical skill required to render texture through ink and pigment. The bird, rendered with careful attention to its plumage, provides a sense of scale and life to the scene.
Fan paintings were often produced as gifts or for personal use among the elite, serving as portable objects of aesthetic appreciation.
