A delicate pastel study by Giovanni Segantini, capturing the light and texture of an alpine forest through his signature Divisionist technique.
Giovanni Segantini, a central figure in Italian Divisionism, produced this study during his final years in the Engadine valley. The work demonstrates his characteristic application of colour, where individual strokes of pigment are placed side by side to create a luminous effect. Rather than blending colours on the palette, Segantini relied on the viewer's eye to synthesise the hues, a technique that provides the foliage with a distinct, shimmering quality.
The composition focuses on the verticality of the pine trunk, which anchors the scene against a dense backdrop of alpine flora. Small, bright touches of pink suggest the presence of rhododendrons, contrasting with the deep greens and earthy tones of the forest floor. A small stream or pool of water occupies the lower right, reflecting the surrounding vegetation and adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still environment. The texture of the pastel medium is evident throughout, lending a soft, granular appearance to the bark and the needles.
Segantini spent much of his later career capturing the light and atmosphere of the high Alps. His approach to nature was both observational and symbolic, often imbuing his subjects with a sense of quietude. This piece reflects his interest in the interplay between light and shadow in mountainous terrain. By focusing on a single tree, he invites a closer inspection of the natural world, stripping away the grander vistas often associated with his larger canvases to present a more intimate view of the forest. The work remains a clear example of his technical precision and his dedication to capturing the specific atmospheric conditions of the Swiss mountains.
