A striking 1909 Expressionist lithograph by Oskar Kokoschka, featuring a raw, emotive interpretation of the Pieta for the Vienna Kunstschau.
This lithographic poster, created by Oskar Kokoschka in 1909, advertises the Sommer-Theater at the Vienna Kunstschau. The composition depicts a Pieta, a traditional subject showing the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ. Kokoschka subverts the classical serenity of this theme, replacing it with the raw, jagged emotional intensity characteristic of early Austrian Expressionism.
The figures are rendered with stark, skeletal forms and exaggerated gestures. The body of the male figure is painted in a visceral, blood-red hue, contrasting sharply against the pale, almost ghostly skin of the female figure. The background is a dark, vertical arrangement that suggests a shallow, claustrophobic space. Above the figures, the artist's name is printed in bold, block-like lettering, while the lower section contains the event details in a similar, hand-drawn typeface. The inclusion of a moon and a crescent shape adds a celestial, yet unsettling, quality to the scene.
Kokoschka was a central figure in the Viennese avant-garde during this period. His work often explored themes of psychological tension and human vulnerability. This poster demonstrates his ability to integrate graphic design with fine art, using the medium to communicate the dramatic nature of the theatrical performances it promoted. The heavy, expressive lines and the stark colour palette reflect the artist's rejection of academic conventions. By focusing on the physical and emotional agony of the subjects, Kokoschka forces the viewer to confront the raw reality of the human condition. This piece remains a significant example of how early twentieth-century artists utilised commercial formats to disseminate their aesthetic vision to a wider public audience in Vienna.
