A sixteenth-century Italian engraving by Giulio Sanuto, depicting the Pieta with technical precision and dramatic light.
This engraving by Giulio Sanuto depicts the Pieta, a traditional subject in Christian art showing the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Christ. Sanuto, an Italian printmaker active in the sixteenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of precise, rhythmic lines to define form and shadow. The composition is structured around the central figure of Christ, supported by the Virgin and accompanied by two angels. The background features radiating lines that suggest a divine light, drawing the eye toward the figures.
The print reflects the influence of Michelangelo, whose own sculptural interpretations of this theme were widely disseminated through such reproductive engravings. Sanuto employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to model the musculature of Christ and the drapery of the garments. This method creates a sense of volume and weight, typical of the Mannerist period, where the focus often shifted toward exaggerated anatomy and emotional intensity. The inscription at the base, 'M.A. inuetor', acknowledges the original design source, while 'Ant. sala. Excudebat' identifies the publisher, Antonio Salamanca, who was active in Rome.
As a work of the sixteenth century, this engraving serves as an example of how printmaking allowed for the circulation of artistic ideas across Europe. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the high standards of Italian printmaking during this era. The print remains a study in the application of engraving techniques to convey both physical form and theological narrative, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation to focus on the gravity of the scene.
