A refined woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro from his 'Picture Book on Flowers of the Four Seasons', capturing a delicate genre scene from the Edo period.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Picture Book on Flowers of the Four Seasons' (Ehon shiki no hana), a publication by the Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro. Utamaro is recognised for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre, particularly his focus on the female form and the social customs of the Edo period. This specific composition captures a domestic or theatrical scene, featuring a group of women gathered in an interior space, while a male figure holding a small drum appears to the right.
The composition employs the characteristic flat perspective found in Japanese woodblock printing of the late eighteenth century. The figures are rendered with delicate, flowing lines, and the colour palette remains muted, relying on soft earth tones and subtle washes to define the garments and the architectural elements. The inclusion of cranes, which appear as motifs within the scene, adds a layer of symbolic meaning common in traditional Japanese art.
Utamaro was a master of the bijin-ga style, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. In this work, he demonstrates his ability to arrange multiple figures within a confined space, maintaining a sense of balance and narrative flow across the two pages of the book. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where the interplay between human subjects and nature-inspired patterns on textiles was a frequent theme. As a museum-grade fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the technical precision of Edo-period printmaking, where the carver and printer worked in tandem with the artist to produce works for a growing urban audience. The paper texture and the soft application of pigment are preserved in this reproduction, allowing for a clear view of the original woodblock impressions.
