This woodblock print originates from the 'Picture Book of Komatsubara' (Ehon komatsubara), a work by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Active during the early eighteenth century, Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator who produced numerous ehon, or picture books, which combined text and image to narrate stories or provide aesthetic instruction. His style is characterised by a focus on the daily lives of women and the refined atmosphere of the imperial court or urban society.

The composition follows the traditional format of a double-page spread. On the right, a woman in elaborate robes sits within an architectural setting, her posture and attire suggesting a scene from classical literature or a poetic narrative. The left page provides a visual counterpoint, featuring a garden view with peonies and a spider web, accompanied by calligraphic text. The lines are clean and precise, typical of the woodblock printing techniques of the period, which relied on the skill of the carver to translate the artist's brushwork into a durable matrix for printing.

Sukenobu was instrumental in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre in Kyoto, often focusing on subjects that appealed to a literate and cultured audience.
