A woodblock print from the Ehon Ranjatai by Tsukioka Settei, featuring narrative scenes with figures and calligraphy in the traditional Ukiyo-e style.
This woodblock print originates from the Ehon Ranjatai, a publication by the Japanese artist Tsukioka Settei. Active during the mid-to-late eighteenth century, Settei was a painter and printmaker based in Osaka. He is known for his work in the Ukiyo-e style, often focusing on figures and narrative scenes. This specific work demonstrates the characteristic line work of the period, where thin, controlled ink strokes define both the human figures and the surrounding architectural elements.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, a common format for Japanese illustrated books of this era. The left panel depicts a seated figure in traditional attire, positioned within an interior space that includes a low table and a standing lamp. The right panel shows an ethereal, standing figure accompanied by stylized clouds, suggesting a supernatural or legendary narrative. The integration of text directly onto the image surface is a standard feature of the ehon (picture book) format, where the calligraphy functions as both a narrative device and a visual element that balances the composition.
Settei's approach to the human form is restrained, focusing on clear outlines and expressive gestures rather than heavy shading or complex perspective. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the characters and the accompanying text. This print offers a glimpse into the literary and visual culture of the Edo period, where historical and legendary tales were disseminated through mass-produced woodblock volumes. The work reflects the technical precision of the carvers and printers who collaborated with artists like Settei to produce these accessible cultural artefacts.
