Philosophy was one of three Faculty Paintings commissioned by the University of Vienna in 1894. Gustav Klimt worked on the composition for several years, eventually presenting a final version that diverged significantly from the academic expectations of the time. The work depicts a column of human figures, representing the stages of life, drifting through a cosmic, nebulous void. A large, spectral face emerges from the darkness on the right, observing the procession of humanity below.

The imagery avoids traditional allegorical representations of knowledge or reason. Instead, Klimt focuses on the mystery of existence and the indifference of the universe toward human endeavour. The figures are rendered with a sense of weightlessness, caught in a stream of darkness and starlight. This approach caused considerable controversy among the university faculty, who criticised the lack of clarity and the pessimistic tone of the work.

Klimt utilised a technique that blends figurative elements with abstract, atmospheric textures. The composition relies on the vertical movement of the figures, creating a sense of descent or suspension. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, ochre, and deep shadows, which contribute to the ethereal quality of the scene. The original canvas was destroyed by fire in 1945, leaving only photographic records of the final state. This print captures the atmospheric density and the symbolic weight of the original composition, offering a view into the experimental period of the Vienna Secession.
