A formal portrait engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti, depicting the seventeenth-century military commander Philippe Emmanuel, comte de Ligniville.
This engraving by Vincenzo Vangelisti depicts Philippe Emmanuel, comte de Ligniville, a military figure of the seventeenth century. Vangelisti, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, demonstrates a high level of technical precision in this portrait. The work follows the conventions of formal portraiture from the period, presenting the subject within a trompe l'oeil oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
The subject is shown in half-length, wearing armour and a sash, which denotes his rank as a military commander. His hair is styled in the fashion of the mid-seventeenth century, and his expression is composed. The background features a draped curtain, a common motif in aristocratic portraiture intended to convey status and gravity. The lower portion of the print includes a cartouche containing an inscription that identifies the sitter and details his titles, including Maréchal Général des Camps et Armées de Lorraine et de Bavière.
Vangelisti employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the metal armour, the fabric of the sash, and the soft curls of the hair. The contrast between the light and shadow across the subject's face and the metallic sheen of the breastplate provides a sense of volume. The architectural elements of the frame are rendered with clean, parallel lines, creating a sense of depth and stability. This print is a characteristic example of the reproductive engraving tradition, where artists translated painted portraits into the medium of print to facilitate the wider circulation of likenesses of historical and noble figures. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the disciplined approach to printmaking that defined Vangelisti's output during his time at the Académie Royale.
