Beskrivning
A 1532 portrait of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon by Lucas Cranach the Elder, featuring a stark, focused composition.
This portrait depicts Philipp Melanchthon, a central figure of the Protestant Reformation and a close associate of Martin Luther. Painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1532, the work captures the scholar in a characteristic three-quarter view. Cranach, who maintained a productive workshop in Wittenberg, was the primary visual chronicler of the Reformation movement. His approach to portraiture here is direct and unadorned, focusing on the intellectual presence of the subject.
Melanchthon is shown wearing a simple, dark garment with a high collar, which contrasts with the pale, cool blue background. This choice of colour palette draws attention to the sitter's facial features and his thoughtful expression. The artist employs a precise, linear style, typical of his mature period. The brushwork is controlled, defining the contours of the face and the texture of the hair with clarity. The hands are clasped at the bottom of the frame, a common pose in Cranach's portraiture that suggests composure and restraint.
To the right of the sitter, the date 1532 is inscribed alongside the artist's signature mark: a small winged serpent. This emblem was granted to Cranach by Frederick the Wise in 1508 and appears on many of his works. The painting reflects the shift in Northern European art towards humanistic portraiture, where the individual's character is presented with psychological accuracy. By stripping away elaborate backgrounds or symbolic accessories, Cranach allows the viewer to engage directly with the subject. This print reproduces the original panel painting, maintaining the balance between the stark, dark clothing and the luminous, light-toned backdrop. It provides a clear view of the technical skill involved in sixteenth-century German portraiture, where the focus remains firmly on the representation of the human form.
