A refined study of a pheasant by the Japanese master Ogata Kōrin, showcasing the elegant, decorative style of the Rinpa school.
This work by Ogata Kōrin displays the characteristic aesthetic of the Rinpa school, which flourished in Kyoto during the Edo period. Kōrin is recognised for his ability to combine decorative sensibilities with a keen observation of natural forms. The composition centres on a single pheasant, rendered with a focus on the contrast between the dark, sleek neck and the textured, patterned plumage of the wings and tail. The bird is positioned in profile, its head tilted upwards in a gesture that suggests alertness.
The background remains largely unadorned, a common technique in Japanese painting to create a sense of space and focus the viewer on the primary subject. Small clusters of blue flowers are placed at the base, providing a subtle colour balance to the red markings on the bird's face. The use of ink and colour on silk allows for soft transitions in tone, particularly in the rendering of the pheasant's feathers. Kōrin employs a calligraphic approach to the lines, ensuring that the form of the bird is defined with precision rather than heavy outlines.
As a leading figure of the Rinpa movement, Kōrin often drew inspiration from classical Japanese literature and nature. This piece reflects the school's preference for stylised, elegant depictions of flora and fauna. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the lower left, confirming his authorship. The work demonstrates a balance between naturalistic detail and a refined, graphic quality that is typical of Kōrin's output. It remains a clear example of the Edo period's approach to decorative art, where the arrangement of elements on the surface is as important as the subject itself. The print captures the original texture of the silk and the delicate application of pigment, offering a view into the artistic traditions of 18th-century Japan.
