This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the moment Phaeton approaches his father, Apollo, to request control of the sun chariot. Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his prolific output of prints, captures the narrative with the characteristic precision of the early seventeenth-century Italian school. The composition centres on the interaction between the two figures, set against a backdrop of clouds and the radiant sun.
The artist employs a disciplined hatching technique to define the musculature of the horses and the drapery of the figures. The chariot, rendered with decorative wheel details, occupies the left side of the frame, while the kneeling Phaeton provides a sense of scale and supplication. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Funestas ad Phoebum Phaeton fundit preces', translates to 'Phaeton pours out fatal prayers to Phoebus', providing the viewer with the specific literary context of the encounter.
