A 1924 study by Georgia O'Keeffe, this work presents a magnified petunia bloom through a modernist lens, focusing on form, light, and colour.
Georgia O'Keeffe produced this study of a petunia in 1924, a period during which she began to focus on the magnified forms of flora. By isolating the flower from its natural environment and enlarging its scale, O'Keeffe forces the viewer to confront the organic structure of the petals. The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow across the velvet-like surface of the bloom, creating a sense of volume that borders on the abstract.
The colour palette is dominated by deep, saturated purples that transition into lighter, almost translucent tones near the edges of the petals. This graduation of colour provides a sense of depth, drawing the eye toward the centre of the flower where the stamen is visible. O'Keeffe avoids the traditional botanical illustration approach of documenting a specimen for scientific purposes. Instead, she treats the flower as a subject for formal exploration, balancing the curves of the petals against the negative space of the background.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the precision of form and the emotional resonance of colour. The smooth application of paint minimises visible brushwork, allowing the focus to remain on the contours and the subtle shifts in hue. By removing the context of the garden or the stem, the flower becomes a self-contained object. This approach was characteristic of her work during the 1920s, as she moved away from the representational norms of the era toward a more personal, modernist aesthetic. The print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the soft transitions and the intensity of the purple pigments.
