A delicate woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi featuring two waxwings perched on a berry-laden branch, rendered in the traditional kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi depicts a pair of waxwings, known in Dutch as pestvogels, perched upon a slender branch. The composition adheres to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. The artist employs a muted, atmospheric background that suggests a cool, overcast day, allowing the subtle plumage of the birds to remain the primary focus.
The upper portion of the print features a branch laden with small red berries, providing a contrast to the grey tones of the background and the soft, neutral feathers of the waxwings. One bird is positioned facing the viewer, while the other leans downward, creating a sense of natural movement and interaction. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical skill required in the production of Japanese woodblock prints during the early twentieth century.
Matsuki Heikichi was a publisher and artist associated with the shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional printmaking techniques by incorporating Western influences, such as atmospheric perspective and realistic shading. This work demonstrates the balance between traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and the desire for a more naturalistic representation of wildlife. The use of a soft, gradient background, often referred to as bokashi, adds depth to the scene without relying on complex spatial structures. The print serves as a quiet study of avian behaviour, captured with restraint and technical accuracy. It is a representative example of the period when Japanese printmakers began to explore new ways of depicting the natural world for both domestic and international audiences.
