A detailed etching by Henry Louis Basan depicting a figure in traditional Persian-style dress, showcasing fine line work and historical costume.
This etching, titled Perzische man, is a work by the French engraver Henry Louis Basan. It depicts a figure dressed in what was historically interpreted as Persian attire, featuring a heavy fur-lined cloak, a feathered cap, and a walking stick. The composition draws upon the tradition of the 'tronie', a genre popularised in the seventeenth century, where artists focused on character studies and exotic costumes rather than specific portraiture of an individual.
Basan, who was active in the early nineteenth century, is known for his work as a printmaker and publisher. His technical approach here relies on fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the fur and the folds of the fabric. The figure stands in a relaxed posture, with the etching capturing the play of light and shadow across the heavy garments. The background remains largely unworked, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subject and his elaborate outfit.
This print reflects the nineteenth-century interest in Orientalism, a cultural fascination with the aesthetics and costumes of the Near East. While the depiction is stylised, it demonstrates the skill of the engraver in rendering different material surfaces through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The work is presented on paper that shows the natural ageing of the material, which adds to its historical character. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print retains the fine detail of the original copperplate etching, allowing for a clear view of the artist's mark-making process. It is a piece that fits well within collections focused on historical printmaking, costume studies, or the history of European Orientalist art.
