A dynamic Baroque drawing by Godfried Maes depicting the mythological moment Perseus petrifies his enemies with the head of Medusa.
This drawing by the Flemish artist Godfried Maes depicts the classical myth of Perseus. The composition captures the moment Perseus reveals the severed head of Medusa to his adversaries, petrifying them in the process. Maes, a painter active in Antwerp during the late seventeenth century, demonstrates a command of the Baroque style through his use of dynamic movement and dramatic lighting. The figures are arranged in a complex, multi-layered scene that emphasises the chaos of the conflict.
The artist employs ink and grey wash to create depth and volume, allowing the figures to emerge from the background architecture. The classical columns and structures provide a formal setting for the violent action, a common trope in history painting of the period. Perseus stands as the central figure, his posture conveying both authority and the immediate aftermath of his victory. The surrounding soldiers react with varied expressions of shock and physical collapse, illustrating the transformative power of the Gorgon's gaze.
Maes was known for his contributions to the decorative arts in Antwerp, including designs for tapestries and ceiling paintings. This work reflects his training and his ability to organise large groups of figures within a narrative frame. The technical execution, particularly the application of wash to define shadows and musculature, reveals the preparatory nature of the piece. It serves as an example of the academic approach to mythological subjects, where the artist balances anatomical precision with theatrical staging. The work remains a study in the application of light and shadow to guide the viewer through a dense, active scene.
