A nocturnal genre scene by Spanish Romantic painter Leonardo Alenza, capturing a group of figures illuminated by a single light source.
Leonardo Alenza, a figure within the Spanish Romantic tradition, captures a nocturnal scene in 'Per Diem'. The composition focuses on a group of figures gathered in a dimly lit, architectural space, likely a street or a church portico. The primary light source emanates from within the group, casting long shadows and illuminating the faces of the participants with a warm, flickering glow. This use of chiaroscuro creates a sense of theatre and mystery, a common trait in Alenza's work, which often explored the social realities of nineteenth-century Madrid.
The figures are arranged in a loose, informal manner. A priest in white vestments stands near the centre, while other individuals, including children and cloaked adults, surround him. The dark, cavernous background recedes into shadow, pushing the illuminated figures forward. Alenza employs a muted palette dominated by earthy browns, ochres, and deep blacks, which serves to heighten the contrast provided by the light. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, prioritising the overall atmosphere and the emotional weight of the scene over precise anatomical detail.
Alenza was known for his satirical and often grim observations of urban life. While this work possesses a more solemn tone than his caricatures, it retains his interest in the human condition. The title, 'Per Diem', suggests a focus on the daily existence of the common people, reflecting the artist's engagement with the social fabric of his time. The painting provides a glimpse into the nocturnal habits and religious life of the period, captured through a lens of dramatic lighting and sombre realism. It is a study of human interaction under the cover of darkness, where the boundaries between the sacred and the mundane appear blurred.
