Beskrivning
A Pre-Raphaelite depiction of the Homeric figure Penelope, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation beside her loom in an orchard.
John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, a painter associated with the second generation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, produced this work during a period when he was heavily influenced by the aesthetic principles of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. The painting depicts the Homeric figure of Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, who famously waited for her husband's return from the Trojan War.
In this composition, Stanhope presents a dual narrative. On the left, a seated woman, presumably Penelope, rests her head on her hand in a posture of melancholy contemplation. Beside her stands an upright loom, upon which a textile is being woven. The inclusion of the loom references the mythic ruse where Penelope wove and unwove a shroud to delay her suitors. To the right, a second female figure reaches upward into the branches of an orange tree, gathering fruit. This juxtaposition of the static, weary weaver and the active, standing figure creates a rhythmic balance within the frame.
Stanhope employs a muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones, deep blues, and the warm orange hues of the fruit. The attention to textile detail, from the folds of the heavy drapery to the specific weave of the fabric on the loom, reflects the artist's interest in decorative arts and historical costume. The setting, an orchard, provides a naturalistic backdrop that contrasts with the structured, vertical lines of the loom. The work avoids the high-drama typical of earlier Victorian narrative painting, opting instead for a quiet, atmospheric quality. It captures a moment of domestic stillness, focusing on the psychological state of the subject rather than the external action of the epic poem. The composition is carefully arranged to guide the eye between the two figures, linking the act of labour with the passage of time.
