Beskrivning
A classical depiction of the biblical scene of Penance, part of Poussin's first Seven Sacraments series.
Nicolas Poussin painted this work as part of his first series depicting the Seven Sacraments, commissioned by his patron Cassiano dal Pozzo. The scene illustrates the biblical account of Christ at the house of Simon the Pharisee, where a woman washes his feet with her tears and dries them with her hair. Poussin organises the composition with a rigorous, architectural clarity that defines his mature style. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner across the foreground, echoing the classical relief sculptures he studied in Rome.
The setting is a Roman-style interior, featuring columns and a draped background that frame the central action. Poussin employs a measured use of light and shadow to direct the viewer's attention toward the interaction between Christ and the kneeling woman. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the distinct red and yellow garments of the figures, which provide a sense of visual rhythm across the canvas. Every gesture and posture is calculated to convey the gravity of the theological subject matter.
Unlike the more dramatic, emotional works of his contemporaries, Poussin maintains a sense of intellectual detachment. He prioritises order and balance, ensuring that the narrative remains legible. The table, laden with vessels and food, serves as a grounding element, while the surrounding figures react with varying degrees of contemplation or observation. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise classical antiquity with Christian iconography, a hallmark of his career in Rome. The precision of the drapery and the anatomical accuracy of the figures reflect his dedication to the principles of the French classical tradition, which he helped to establish during the seventeenth century.

Penance - Nicolas Poussin
Artist Biography
Nicolas Poussin
Poussin's artistic vision was rooted in order, reason, and harmony. Unlike the dramatic flair of the Baroque, Poussin sought clarity and balance in his paintings. His meticulously planned compositions, populated with figures inspired by ancient sculpture, evoke a sense of timelessness and moral virtue. Key works like "The Death of Germanicus" and "The Rape of the Sabine Women" exemplify his dedication to historical and mythological subjects, rendered with a controlled palette and precise draughtsmanship.
Although he spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, Poussin's influence on French art was profound. He became a touchstone for generations of artists seeking to emulate his intellectual approach and classical ideals. His legacy extends beyond individual paintings; it encompasses a philosophy of art that values intellect, order, and the pursuit of ideal beauty. Poussin died in Rome in 1665, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire awe and intellectual engagement.
