A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Cornelis Danckerts, depicting a group of peasants in a tavern, based on a composition by Adriaen van Ostade.
This etching by Cornelis Danckerts depicts a scene of daily life within a Dutch tavern, a popular subject during the seventeenth century. The composition is based on a painting by Adriaen van Ostade, as indicated by the inscription 'A. v. Ostade pinxit' at the base of the print. Danckerts, a skilled engraver and publisher, captures the textures of the wooden interior and the rough clothing of the figures with precise, rhythmic line work.
Three men occupy the foreground, gathered around a simple wooden table. One figure holds a glass, while another sits in a relaxed posture, pipe in hand. A third man stands behind them, observing the interaction. In the background, a fourth figure is visible near a leaded glass window, adding depth to the domestic setting. The scene avoids idealisation, focusing instead on the mundane activities of the lower classes. The play of light and shadow, achieved through varied hatching techniques, creates a sense of volume and atmosphere within the confined space.
Danckerts was part of a prolific family of engravers and publishers in Amsterdam. His work often involved translating the paintings of contemporary masters into prints, which allowed these compositions to reach a wider audience. This particular etching demonstrates the technical proficiency required to replicate the painterly qualities of Van Ostade's original work using only the medium of the copper plate. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, 'Justus Danckerts Excudit', confirms the commercial nature of the print, which was intended for distribution to collectors and art enthusiasts of the period. The work remains a clear example of the Dutch interest in genre scenes, where the focus is placed on the observation of human behaviour in everyday environments.
