A powerful interpretation of a rural scene, featuring bold brushwork and a striking contrast between golden straw and deep blue tones.
Vincent van Gogh produced this work during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It is one of several interpretations he created based on the drawings of Jean-François Millet, an artist he admired for his depictions of rural life. Van Gogh did not have access to Millet's original paintings, so he worked from black-and-white reproductions, which allowed him to interpret the colour palette through his own expressive lens.
The composition focuses on a single figure bent over her task. The woman is positioned in a barn, with a ladder leaning against the wall to her right. Her posture is heavy and rhythmic, reflecting the physical exertion of agricultural labour. Van Gogh employs his characteristic thick brushwork, using short, directional strokes to define the texture of the straw and the folds of the woman's clothing. The colour scheme relies on a contrast between the golden yellow of the straw and the deep, cool blues of the background wall. This juxtaposition creates a sense of visual tension, pulling the viewer's eye between the figure and her environment.
Unlike the more naturalistic approach of Millet, Van Gogh uses colour to convey mood rather than literal representation. The blue wall is not merely a backdrop but a saturated field of pigment that pushes the figure forward. The lines are assertive and visible, showing the speed and energy with which the artist applied the paint. This piece demonstrates his interest in the dignity of manual work, a theme that occupied him throughout his career. By translating Millet's work into his own visual language, Van Gogh transformed a traditional subject into a study of form, light, and personal expression. The result is a work that captures the weight of the peasant's life through bold, rhythmic application of paint.
