A traditional Ming Dynasty bird-and-flower painting featuring a peacock, pine tree, and camellia blossoms, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
Zhu Duan, a painter active during the Ming Dynasty, produced this work in the tradition of bird-and-flower painting. The composition features a peacock perched upon a rock, positioned beneath the boughs of a pine tree. Camellia blossoms emerge from the base of the rock, providing a contrast to the darker, more muted tones of the background. The artist employs a technique that balances the precise rendering of the bird's plumage with the atmospheric quality of the surrounding environment.
The pine tree, a symbol of longevity in Chinese art, frames the upper portion of the vertical scroll. Its needles are rendered with soft, layered brushwork, creating a sense of depth against the silk ground. The peacock, depicted in a moment of quiet observation, displays the characteristic eye-spots of its train, which are painted with subtle colour. The camellia flowers are executed with delicate strokes, their white petals standing out against the weathered texture of the rock formation.
This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the observation of nature served as a primary subject for scholarly and professional painters alike. The use of ink and colour on silk allows for a smooth transition between the solid forms of the rock and the more ethereal quality of the pine branches.
