A poignant tribute to his mentor Anton Mauve, this 1888 painting captures a blossoming peach tree in Arles with Van Gogh's signature expressive brushwork.
Painted in Arles in March 1888, this work captures a single peach tree in full blossom against a bright, cloud-streaked sky. Vincent van Gogh produced this piece shortly after arriving in the south of France, a period marked by his fascination with the arrival of spring. The painting is dedicated to the Dutch painter Anton Mauve, a cousin by marriage and an early mentor to Van Gogh, who had passed away in February of that year. The inscription 'Souvenir de Mauve' is visible in the lower left corner.
The composition is defined by the gnarled, dark trunk of the tree, which contrasts with the delicate, pale pink blossoms. Van Gogh employs his characteristic impasto technique, applying paint in thick, rhythmic strokes that provide the surface with a tangible texture. The ground is rendered in short, directional marks that suggest the uneven terrain of an orchard, while the fence to the right provides a vertical anchor for the scene. The colour palette relies on the interplay between the cool blues of the sky and the warm, soft pinks of the flowers, creating a sense of atmospheric clarity typical of the Provençal spring.
Van Gogh was deeply affected by the news of Mauve's death, and this painting functions as a personal tribute. By choosing a subject that represents renewal and the cycle of nature, he offers a quiet, contemplative response to loss. The work remains a clear example of his ability to imbue a simple natural subject with personal meaning through his expressive use of colour and brushwork. It is one of several orchard studies he completed during this productive spring, reflecting his ongoing interest in the Japanese woodblock prints that influenced his approach to composition and flat, decorative colour fields.
