Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement, painted this view of Saint-Tropez in 1893. The work demonstrates his engagement with the divisionist technique, where small, distinct touches of colour are applied to the canvas to create a sense of luminosity and atmospheric depth. Unlike the more rigid, mathematical approach of Georges Seurat, Luce utilised a more spontaneous and tactile application of paint, which is evident in the textured surface of this composition.
