A refined surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, featuring two distinct textile patterns with plum blossom motifs.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, became a master of this refined format. The work displays two folded textile patterns, presented with the precision of a fashion study or a pattern book. The upper fabric features a geometric weave overlaid with circular motifs, while the lower fabric shows a striped design punctuated by stylised plum blossom emblems. The composition is sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the technical execution of the woodblock carving and the subtle application of colour. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top suggests the print was associated with a specific poetic gathering or a commemorative event. The palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones of ochre, teal, and charcoal to define the textures of the fabrics. Surimono prints were produced with high-quality materials, often incorporating metallic pigments or embossing, which allowed artists to experiment with textures that were not possible in mass-produced commercial prints. This particular piece demonstrates the intersection of fashion, poetry, and graphic design in early nineteenth-century Japan. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the fabric folds reflect the aesthetic preferences of the literati class, who valued understated elegance over the more boisterous imagery found in standard ukiyo-e prints. By isolating these patterns against a plain background, Hokkei elevates the mundane subject of textile design into a formal artistic exercise.
