Beskrivning

A detailed ornithological study of the extinct Passenger Pigeon, originally published in John James Audubon's The Birds of America.

This print originates from the monumental publication, The Birds of America, produced by John James Audubon between 1827 and 1838. Audubon sought to document every bird species in North America, often depicting them at life size to provide a sense of scale and presence. This specific plate captures the Passenger Pigeon, a species now extinct, in a moment of interaction between a male and female bird.

The composition is characteristic of Audubon's approach, which moved away from the static, profile-based illustrations common in earlier scientific texts. Instead, he presented birds in active, naturalistic poses, often perched on branches that suggest their native habitat. The birds are rendered with precise attention to the texture of their plumage, the subtle shifts in their slate-blue and russet colouration, and the specific anatomy of their beaks and wings.

Technically, the work is an aquatint etching, finished with hand-applied watercolours. This process allowed for the soft gradients and delicate tonal variations seen in the feathers. The background remains minimal, ensuring the viewer's attention stays on the biological details of the subjects. The inclusion of the branch and a few withered leaves provides a simple context for the birds, grounding the figures without distracting from the scientific intent of the illustration.

Audubon's work remains a primary reference for historical ornithology. His ability to combine rigorous observation with artistic composition resulted in images that function as both scientific records and aesthetic objects. This print offers a clear view into the natural history of the nineteenth century, documenting a species that once existed in vast numbers across the continent.

Artist Biography

John James Audubon

Audubon shot the birds first, then wired them into lifelike poses and painted them. Birds of America (1827-1838), engraved and printed in Scotland and England, contains plates measuring roughly thirty-nine by twenty-six inches so the birds could be shown life-size. It is one of the most ambitious natural history publications ever produced.

He was born illegitimate in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the son of a French merchant and a Creole woman. He was sent to America at eighteen to avoid Napoleonic conscription. He was also a serial fabricator: he claimed his father was an admiral (he was a captain), said his family had been imprisoned in the Bastille (they had not), and invented frontier stories about fighting wolves and sleeping in igloos. He ran a dry-goods store in Kentucky and was jailed for bankruptcy in 1819.

The paintings themselves are extraordinary: precise, dynamic, and composed with a narrative quality that goes beyond scientific illustration. His legacy is contested. The National Audubon Society and several regional chapters dropped his name in 2023 because of his documented history as an enslaver. He died in 1851.
