A delicate etching by Félix Bracquemond, featuring birds perched on bamboo during a rain shower, created for the Haviland 'Service Parisien'.
This etching is a component of the famous 'Service Parisien', a dinner service commissioned by the porcelain manufacturer Haviland and Co. Félix Bracquemond, a central figure in the French etching revival, designed the service to reflect the growing European fascination with Japanese art. The composition demonstrates the influence of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly in its asymmetrical arrangement and the economy of line used to depict the natural world.
The image captures a quiet moment of rainfall, with delicate, diagonal strokes suggesting the descent of water against a sparse background. Small birds are positioned upon bamboo branches, their forms rendered with minimal, precise marks that convey movement and posture. A few birds are shown on the ground, adding a sense of scale and narrative to the scene. The composition avoids the heavy shading typical of traditional Western academic art, opting instead for a clean, graphic quality that prioritises the silhouette and the negative space of the paper.
Bracquemond was instrumental in introducing Japanese aesthetics to the French decorative arts. By integrating these motifs into functional objects like dinnerware, he brought a new visual language into the domestic sphere. This print reflects the artist's technical mastery of the etching needle, where every mark serves a specific purpose in defining the form. The work is a study in restraint, showing how a few well-placed lines can evoke atmospheric conditions and the behaviour of wildlife. It remains a clear example of the cross-cultural exchange that defined late nineteenth-century European design, moving away from ornate Victorian excess toward a more refined, nature-inspired simplicity.
