Beskrivning
A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, capturing the unique flora of Chile with scientific precision and naturalistic colour.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented global flora with scientific precision. This work, painted during her 1884 expedition to Chile, captures the unique ecology of the region. The composition focuses on the parasitic plants clinging to the native beech trees, rendered with the clarity that defined her approach to botanical documentation. North often painted on-site, using oil on board to ensure her observations remained accurate despite the challenges of travel.
The foreground features the bright, spiky blooms of the parasitic species, contrasting with the pale, hanging strands of lichen or epiphytic growth. A single yellow butterfly provides a point of movement within the static, mountainous backdrop. The distant hills are painted in soft, atmospheric tones, which allow the foreground details to remain the primary subject. North avoided the romanticised style common to her contemporaries, preferring a direct, objective representation of the plants she encountered.
Her collection, housed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, remains a significant record of plant life as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil paint, from the fine brushwork on the petals to the layered application of colour on the foliage. It offers a glimpse into the rigorous documentation practices of a woman who travelled extensively to record the natural world before the advent of colour photography. The work is a clear example of her ability to combine scientific observation with a keen eye for composition, ensuring that the botanical specimens are identifiable while maintaining a sense of the environment in which they grow.

Parasites on Beech Trees, Chili - Marianne North
Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
