A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll by Momokawa Shikō, depicting a courtesan in traditional attire alongside elegant Japanese calligraphy.
This hanging scroll depicts a courtesan in a moment of quiet movement. Momokawa Shikō, an artist associated with the Katsukawa school, captures the figure with a focus on the elaborate layers of her kimono. The subject is shown in profile, her hand raised to adjust her hair, a gesture that draws attention to the stylised features typical of the period. The dark, sweeping lines of her outer garment contrast with the patterned fabric of her obi and the red under-layers, creating a visual rhythm across the composition.
The upper portion of the scroll features a significant passage of calligraphy. This integration of text and image is a hallmark of the period, where the poem or inscription provides a thematic layer to the visual representation. The artist employs a delicate line quality, particularly in the rendering of the face and the fine details of the hair ornaments. The figure occupies a neutral space, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures of the silk and the precision of the brushwork.
Momokawa Shikō worked within the conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which sought to document the fleeting pleasures of urban life in Edo-period Japan. This work reflects the interest in the fashion and grace of high-ranking courtesans, who were frequent subjects for artists of the time. The muted colour palette, dominated by dark tones, red accents, and the natural hue of the silk, provides a sense of age and authenticity. This print preserves the aesthetic qualities of the original hanging scroll, offering a view into the stylistic preferences of eighteenth-century Japanese portraiture. The balance between the calligraphic elements and the painted figure demonstrates the technical skill required to produce such a cohesive work on silk.
