A detailed woodblock triptych depicting a Meiji-era military procession, showcasing the fusion of traditional Japanese attire and Western-style uniforms.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji captures a moment of transition in Meiji-era Japan. The work depicts a military procession, illustrating the modernisation of the Japanese armed forces during the late nineteenth century. The soldiers are shown wearing a hybrid of traditional Japanese headgear and Western-style military uniforms, reflecting the rapid cultural and political shifts occurring at the time. The composition is divided into three panels, a common format for ukiyo-e triptychs, which allows for a wide, panoramic view of the marching column.
Yoshifuji employs a clear, graphic style to delineate the figures. The soldiers carry rifles with fixed bayonets, while the musicians in the foreground play drums and flutes, maintaining a sense of rhythmic order. The colour palette is restrained, using blocks of indigo, red, and ochre to define the uniforms and equipment against a neutral background. The architecture visible in the upper portion of the print suggests a fortified location, providing context for the military exercise.
As a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshifuji was well-versed in the conventions of the ukiyo-e tradition, yet this work demonstrates his interest in documenting contemporary events. The print serves as a visual record of the Meiji government's efforts to adopt Western military organisation and technology. The attention to detail in the uniforms and the precise arrangement of the troops indicate the artist's focus on the changing nature of national identity during this period. The print remains a valuable example of how traditional Japanese printmaking techniques were adapted to narrate the modernisation of the state.
