Boris Kustodiev, a painter associated with the World of Art group, frequently explored the customs of provincial Russian life. This work depicts the celebration of Maslenitsa, a traditional Slavic festival marking the end of winter. The central figure, a young man dressed in a deep blue coat and a patterned scarf, plays an accordion, a common sight during these festivities. His presence dominates the foreground, while the background provides a glimpse into the village life of the period.
The composition uses a flattened perspective, characteristic of Kustodiev's approach to folk-inspired subjects. The snow-covered village, with its wooden houses and figures engaged in winter activities, creates a sense of seasonal atmosphere. Kustodiev often employed a bright, clear palette to convey the crispness of a winter day.
