Roberto Matta, a Chilean artist associated with the Surrealist movement, produced this work during his formative years in exile. Panama (1941) reflects his interest in the intersection of biological forms and psychological states. The composition features fluid, anthropomorphic figures that seem to emerge from a void, a hallmark of his early morphological experiments. Matta often described his work as psychological morphology, aiming to map the internal structures of the mind rather than external reality.
