A classical mythological scene depicting the pursuit of the nymph Syrinx by the god Pan, rendered in the fluid, decorative style of the French Rococo.
Jean François de Troy, a prominent figure in the French Rococo period, depicts the classical myth of Pan and Syrinx in this composition. The narrative originates from Ovid's Metamorphoses, recounting the pursuit of the nymph Syrinx by the god Pan. Upon reaching the river Ladon, Syrinx appeals to the water nymphs for assistance, resulting in her transformation into reeds to escape her pursuer. De Troy captures the moment of tension as Pan approaches the riverbank, where Syrinx stands amidst a group of nymphs.
The painting displays the characteristic fluidity of the early eighteenth-century French school. The figures are arranged with a focus on theatrical gesture and soft, rounded forms. The palette utilises earthy tones for the woodland setting, contrasted against the pale, luminous skin of the nymphs and the warmer, ruddy complexion of Pan. The artist employs a loose, painterly brushwork that defines the foliage and the water, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The composition balances the dynamic movement of the central figures with the more static, observational poses of the nymphs resting by the water.
De Troy was known for his 'tableaux de mode' and historical subjects, often blending classical themes with the decorative sensibilities of his time. This work reflects the period's interest in pastoral mythology, a common subject for private collections in Paris. The interplay of light and shadow across the figures draws the eye toward the central interaction, while the surrounding environment provides a sense of enclosure. The inclusion of the swan in the lower left corner adds a subtle detail to the river setting, reinforcing the aquatic theme of the transformation. This piece offers a clear example of the stylistic transition from the heavier Baroque tradition toward the lighter, more ornamental qualities associated with the Rococo aesthetic.
