An architectural engraving by Peter Paul Rubens from his 1622 study of Genoese buildings, capturing the precise facade of the Palazzo Patrone.
This architectural engraving depicts the facade of the Palazzo Patrone in Genoa, a structure documented by Peter Paul Rubens during his extensive travels in Italy. Published in his 1622 volume, 'Palazzi di Genova', this work demonstrates the artist's keen interest in the classical principles of Italian Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Rubens sought to provide a systematic record of the Genoese urban environment, offering precise elevations that served as a reference for architects and patrons across Northern Europe.
The print displays a rigorous, linear approach to architectural representation. The facade is organised into three distinct horizontal registers, reflecting the traditional hierarchy of a grand Italian townhouse. The ground floor features heavy rustication, providing a solid base for the more refined upper levels. The piano nobile and the floor above it are articulated with rhythmic rows of columns and pedimented windows, showcasing the influence of classical orders. The top of the building is finished with a balustrade, maintaining a sense of proportion and balance.
Rubens utilised the medium of engraving to capture the geometric clarity of the building. The lines are clean and deliberate, focusing on the structural logic rather than atmospheric effects. By documenting these structures, Rubens contributed to the dissemination of Italian architectural styles, which would later influence the development of Baroque design in the Low Countries and beyond. This print is a record of a specific historical building, capturing the aesthetic values of the early seventeenth-century Genoese elite. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of architecture and the multifaceted career of Rubens, who was as much a scholar of classical form as he was a painter.
