A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Melchior Küsel depicting the coastal Palace of Cardinal Caraffa in Naples, complete with maritime activity.
This etching by Melchior Küsel depicts the Palace of Cardinal Caraffa, situated near the water in Naples. Küsel, a German printmaker active in the seventeenth century, produced this work as part of a series documenting notable European architecture and sites. The composition focuses on the grand structure of the palace, which features a symmetrical design with classical columns, a raised terrace, and decorative statuary along the roofline.
The foreground shows a bustling maritime scene. Several small boats and a larger vessel with tall masts are moored near the palace walls, suggesting the importance of the sea to the site. Figures are scattered across the quay, providing a sense of scale to the massive architecture. The artist employs precise, thin lines to define the stonework of the building and the ripples of the water, while the sky is rendered with parallel hatching to create a sense of atmosphere.
Below the image, the original German inscription identifies the location as a pleasure house near Naples, surrounded by the sea and belonging to the Viceroy. This print reflects the period interest in topographical documentation and the dissemination of architectural knowledge through engravings. The work demonstrates the technical skill of the Augsburg school of printmaking, where Küsel trained. The clarity of the perspective and the attention to detail in the architectural elements are characteristic of the era, which favoured a systematic approach to representing the built environment. This print offers a view into the historical appearance of Neapolitan coastal architecture during the seventeenth century, capturing both the formal grandeur of the palace and the daily activity of the harbour.
