This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman depicts a pair of kadomatsu, the traditional Japanese pine decorations placed at entrances during the New Year period. As a surimono, this work belongs to a genre of privately commissioned prints, often produced for members of poetry circles. These prints are characterised by their high production quality, use of expensive pigments, and the inclusion of kyoka, or comic verse, which is visible here in the elegant calligraphy surrounding the central motif.
Shunman was a master of the surimono format. His approach here is understated, focusing on the symbolic nature of the pine branches. The kadomatsu represent longevity and the welcoming of ancestral spirits. The artist employs a delicate touch, using soft green tones for the needles and subtle shading to suggest the presence of the decorations against a neutral background. The composition is balanced, allowing the text to interact with the visual elements rather than dominating them. The inclusion of a small insect or creature near the base of the right pine adds a layer of quiet observation, common in the naturalistic tendencies of the period.
