A mid-1930s abstract composition by Arshile Gorky, featuring biomorphic forms and bold, graphic outlines that bridge the gap between Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.
This work by Arshile Gorky dates to the mid-1930s, a period when the artist was actively synthesising the lessons of European modernism with his own developing visual language. Gorky, born Vostanig Manoug Adoian, moved to the United States in 1920 and became a figure of transition between the analytical rigour of Cubism and the emotive, gestural freedom that would later define the New York School.
The composition displays a clear debt to the biomorphic abstraction of Joan Miró and the structured spatial arrangements of Pablo Picasso. Gorky employs a palette of flat, high-contrast colours, including black, white, red, and turquoise, to define shapes that hover between the recognisable and the purely abstract. The forms appear to float against a neutral ground, suggesting a shallow, stage-like space. The black outlines act as a structural skeleton, containing the colour fields and guiding the eye across the canvas.
Unlike his later, more fluid and ethereal works, this painting retains a sense of graphic precision. The shapes are deliberate, with hard edges and distinct boundaries. This piece reflects Gorky's rigorous study of historical masters, as he often copied works by Uccello, Ingres, and Cézanne to understand the mechanics of composition. Here, he applies that discipline to his own vocabulary of signs and symbols. The work serves as an example of the artist's ability to balance controlled, intellectual construction with the intuitive, organic forms that would eventually dominate his mature output. It is a study in the tension between the flat surface of the canvas and the suggestion of three-dimensional objects, rendered with a clarity that distinguishes it from the later, more atmospheric paintings of his final decade.
