A striking assemblage by Arman, featuring an accumulation of paintbrushes layered over a violin to explore the intersection of artistic tools and musical form.
This work by Arman, born Armand Pierre Fernandez, belongs to his series of accumulations. The artist, a central figure in the French Nouveau Réalisme movement, frequently utilised mass-produced objects to explore the relationship between consumer culture and the art object. In this piece, the artist has affixed a dense collection of wooden paintbrushes directly onto the surface, creating a vertical, rhythmic structure that obscures and interacts with the form of a violin beneath.
The composition relies on the repetition of the brush handles, which stand like a palisade across the upper two-thirds of the frame. By incorporating the tools of the painter alongside the instrument of the musician, Arman creates a dialogue between different modes of artistic production. The paintbrushes, often coated in remnants of pigment, suggest the physical labour of the artist, while the violin provides a classical reference point. The work functions as a physical record of the artist's process, where the objects themselves become the medium.
Arman's approach to assemblage involves the systematic gathering of identical or related items. This method removes the objects from their utilitarian context, forcing the viewer to consider their form, texture, and collective presence. The violin, partially hidden by the forest of brushes, appears as a ghost of its former self, integrated into a new, sculptural reality. The colour palette is dominated by the natural wood tones of the brushes, contrasted against the darker, fluid strokes of paint that suggest the body of the instrument. This piece offers a direct engagement with the material world, stripping away traditional representation in favour of a tactile, physical presence that occupies the space between painting and sculpture.
