A sun-drenched genre scene by Henry Herbert La Thangue, depicting rural workers sorting cherries in a Provençal courtyard.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a prominent member of the Newlyn School, a group of British artists who adopted the French practice of painting en plein air. This work captures a quiet, rural scene in Provence, where the artist spent considerable time during his later career. The composition focuses on a woman kneeling on the ground, occupied with the task of sorting and packing cherries. Beside her, another figure assists with the harvest, their forms integrated into the sun-drenched courtyard of a rustic stone building.
The painting is defined by its treatment of light. La Thangue employs a technique of dappled sunlight, where shadows cast by overhead foliage create a complex pattern across the figures and the ground. This approach reflects his interest in the effects of natural illumination on everyday subjects. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones of ochre, beige, and terracotta, which contrast with the small, bright red accents of the cherries scattered across the foreground.
La Thangue often depicted the lives of rural workers, moving away from the more formal portraiture of his contemporaries to focus on the rhythms of agricultural labour. His brushwork is deliberate, capturing the texture of the stone walls and the fabric of the workers' clothing with a sense of immediacy. By placing the viewer at a close distance to the activity, he invites an appreciation for the simplicity of the scene. The work avoids sentimentality, instead presenting a direct observation of a moment in the French countryside. It remains a representative example of the artist's ability to balance realistic detail with the atmospheric qualities of light and shadow.
